Beauty Myth: Oily Skin Does Not Need Moisturizer
Those of us with oily skin fight the constant battle of reducing the shiny and greasy looking appearance that our skin can have. For many with this skin type, they shutter at the thought of putting anything on their skin for fear of more oil popping up, let alone a moisturizer that could increase the slick look they are trying to diminish! But are moisturizers really a culprit when it comes to oil production on the skin? No way! Healthy skin actually has a free flow of oils, so it is all about achieving the right balance. If you’re skipping out on a moisturizer you may actually be working against yourself and making your skin appear even oilier. By not applying moisturizer, your skin will try and compensate for the lack of hydration and produce more oils!
Oily skin is characterized by having an excess of oil or sebum, which lubricates the skin but does not provide moisture. While sebum comes out of the pores and has the ability to seal in moisture, moisturizers have ingredients that are actually able to provide hydration for the skin. Moisture is a key ingredient in the recipe for a healthy, glowing complexion, without it an overproduction of sebum can be triggered as your skin’s way of stopping moisture loss, leaving you looker more oily than usual. Now, if you have an oily skin type you are likely using cleansers and toners that can help reduce some of the sebum on your skin, making it dryer, but moisture can also be taken away along with the oil. These drying products can alter the acid mantle that protects your skin as well, making it more susceptible to dirt and bacteria, so you will need to hydrate and protect your precious skin. After using your other skincare products a moisturizer will help add back the hydration your skin is begging for, create a protective barrier, and aid in stopping your sebum production from kicking into overdrive! To stop the over drying of your skin all together, you should us a soap-free face wash that still has enough power to help balance your oily skin, like the Hydra Refine® Cleansing Mousse. This product is formulated to deep cleanse and help eliminate pore-clogging oil without washing away all your moisture! It also contains, Lemongrass oil which helps to normalize oil production and reduce breakouts.
Moisturizers don’t need to be a heavy cream that makes your skin feel weighed down, scaring you away from ever touching it again. If you have an oily skin type you should ideally stay away from oil-based moisturizers and select a fantastic water-based product instead, like the Hydra Medic® Mattifying Moisturizer.
