Beauty Myth: What you Eat Doesn’t Affect Cellulite

Orange peel and cottage cheese belong in the fridge, not on your thighs! Unfortunately, cellulite is a real and looming skin care concern with bikini season on it’s way. Let’s face it, looking in the mirror and seeing cellulite on your body doesn’t exactly bring a smile to your face. Luckily, there are measures that can be taken to help prevent the formation of cellulite. Although there are a lot of causes of cellulite formation, you’d better believe your diet is a factor!

Sorry ladies it’s in our genes. Cellulite is the result of female fat contained in large oval pockets, with the skin anchored into the dermis like buttons on an upholstered chesterfield sofa. This anchoring causes a spongy appearance to emerge on the surface of the skin. For a woman, her body structure makes it quite easy to develop cellulite. For example, female hormones affect the development of cellulite. PMS and menstruation flood the body with the hormones estrogen and progesterone. Hormonal imbalance causes bloating and fluid retention, congesting the lymphatic system. Poor circulation adds to the formation of edema, resulting in a spongy look.

With fat being the root of formation of cellulite, and already having other pre-existing factors against us, eating a balanced and healthy diet is key to help prevent this formation. Reduced fat diets and balanced nutrition means stronger connective tissue and stronger muscle resulting in leaner mass. Therefore, if you’re a regular at your local fast food establishment, you might want to kick this habit. Rather, head to the grocery store for your meals and stick to buying lean proteins, including chicken and fish, an assortment of green vegetables, and whole wheat products, and prepare meals at home. Skip out on the processed foods, empty calorie snacks and deserts that are high in fat and sugar. It’s okay to indulge here and there, but always in moderation! Drink water to flush out waste and toxins in our body, and exercise at least 30 minutes a day to increase your body’s circulation! Here is a sample menu to give you an example of a day’s worth of meals that will help prevent against the formation of cellulite:
